Professor of Roman Archaeology

Biography

I am a specialist in diachronic landscape archaeology and have worked extensively in North Africa and also in the Middle East (Jordan).

As well as my Roman expertise, I am a specialist in diachronic landscape archaeology and have worked extensively in North Africa and also in the Middle East (Jordan). My most recent projects have involved study of civilisation Saharan in southern Libya (the Garamantes).

Several past projects have produced large datasets of archaeological sites, notably relating to Libya, but also increasingly covering other parts of the Maghreb. I currently also direct a major project funded by the European Research Council that has been assembling large data sets and doing substantial amounts of mapping from satellite images.
